The Smart Meters are coming!
7.10.2012

If you haven't heard or received the letter on how great your life will become, this summer SCE is going to replace your analog electric meter that works just fine with the controversial Smart Meter. So what's the big deal?. Well these draconian devices are just one more way that "the powers to be" (in this case the CPUC) can control your life and take away your right to privacy. According to SCE these devices are going to help you save money and enable you to keep better track of your power consumption. Personally I am fine with the meter I have now.
Quoted from SCE website...........
"Budget Assistant" is a free and easy-to-use tool to help you eliminate energy bill surprises. With Budget Assistant you’ll be able to set monthly spending goals and track your progress and get automated alerts, so you can stay in control and on budget every month."
So SCE, you are going to be monitoring my every move? Really?
SCE are doing the public a favor by forking out millions of dollars to install these things so their customers can save money?
If you don't want one of these thing you can opt out, at a price of course!
"California’s standard for metering is now smart meters. The CPUC has determined that the costs for non-standard service should be paid by those customers who choose the non-standard service. The cost covers manual meter reading and associated operational and billing activities."
Well how come there is no additional cost to read my meter now?

Don't water your lawn, paint it!
7.12.2012

After receiving two violation notices from the City of Thousand Oaks compliance office about my "lawn"(thanks to my neighbors) I was forced to do something about it .
I wasn't interested in joining the "my lawn is greener than yours club" my neighbors have established, as it's not really grass, or at least the kind you buy from Home Depot. The people that owned the house before me were all into nature and planted this wild grass and let it grow long and brown. It's fine during the rainy season as it turns green and actually looks like it could be a proper lawn. As soon as the sun comes out the stuff turns brown and crispy. Because of the price of water going up and up and up and the State of California telling us we are constantly in a drought, save water, the poor little fish in Sacramento......blah, blah, blah, I refuse to water the weed patch in front of the house. Actually I would like to xeriscape it but I just don't have the funds right now to pay a landscaper to re design the whole front yard.
I did some research and found this awesome product called Lawn Lift.

Denny's Thousand Oaks Closes its doors
8.24.2012

Not in Thousand Oaks!
No more Grand Slams for you! After 25 years , Thursday Denny's on Moorpark Rd closed their doors. Denny's issued this statement "We have made the decision not to renew our lease for our Thousand Oaks restaurant. We regularly evaluate each of our restaurants and decided to close this unit in order to focus our efforts on our other nearby locations." This relates to the previous article
"Out with the old, in with the new. What's up with all the long standing restaurants closing?". I have fond memories of this restaurant. When (my then girlfriend)my wife and I first moved in together she worked there as a hostess. I would stop in there all the time. I will miss the great milkshakes and the claw game by the front door. Oh well there's still a Denny's in Newbury Park.

Burglars are in your neighborhood!

Mans best burglar alarm
If you would have told me this a few years ago I would have said "yeah right". Home invasion style burglaries have gone up in the Conejo Valley lately. I myself had an encounter that I never thought I would have to deal with last month. Fortunately my wife and kids were out of the country so I was home alone, asleep on a Monday night. Around 1:00 A.M. I woke to my dog Kaiser barking nervously. I have had Kaiser for six years now and I can tell exactly where he is and what he is doing by the tone of his bark. This was a unusual bark as if someone was outside that he didn't recognize. My first thought was someone is out front messing with my car. I sat up and listened, then I hear the door that lets you into the house from the garage being opened.....WTF! It's not my wife, she's in Brasil, so I do exactly what you are not supposed to do and run down the stairs and confront the intruder. So there I stand a the bottom of the stairs totally naked, unarmed yelling at this person "WHAT THE F@#$K ARE YOU DOING IN MY HOUSE!!!" Immediately upon looking at this guy I did not feel threatened. He had no mask, backpack or weapon, just the most confused look I have ever seen. He looked at me for couple seconds turned for the front door, unlocked it and ran out down the street yelling "sorry dude wrong house!". I collected my thoughts, put some clothes on and rang the Sheriff and told them what had happened. They showed up in about two minutes!. In those two minutes I saw this guy out the window run down the street then back up the street. The cops took a report and went on their way to try and find the intruder.
Honestly, I think the guy was higher than a kite and thought he was in his own house. I have never seen him in the neighborhood before and have no idea what he was doing roaming around alone at 1:00 am on a Monday morning. He must have climbed over the fence met Kaiser and proceeded to let him self into the garage which I had forgot to lock. that's when he met my naked ass and freaked out and bolted up and down the street. Now I have always been on the fence regarding having guns in the house especially with little kids around. If my kids had been in their room, where this guy was right outside of, I would have had to get violent to protect them. I have a cricket bat and some pepper spray handy that I could have used. As far as guns, now I am off the fence. I went down to BIG5 and purchased a Mossberg Security shotgun that will be brandished if this happens again.
I never thought this kind of thing would happen and it was a massive eye opener, even if this guy probably wasn't a real threat and I was able to scare him off with my nakedness. If there is a next time things might be different.

HAZARD REDUCTION
Ventura County residents and property owners cannot ignore the fact that dry, poorly maintained vegetation creates an extreme fire danger to their homes. Well-placed, well-maintained vegetation beautifies and controls erosion in residential neighborhoods. Poorly maintained vegetation is a natural, volatile fuel for fast-spreading wildfires - an invitation to disaster. Property owners and residents can help protect their homes by joining in partnership with their neighbors and the Fire Department to assure compliance with the Department's Fire Hazard Reduction program, as outlined here. The goal is to maintain trees and vegetation that beautify and benefit a property, and to remove hazardous vegetation that provides a combustible fuel supply for wildfire. This is important to every resident of Ventura County, where the fire season is year round. The Ventura County Fire Department wants to work with you to create the most fire-safe community possible. Fire Department personnel welcome your questions and invitations to discuss vegetation management and other fire-related issues with organizations or individuals. For additional information, contact your neighborhood fire station.

Ski Season not over yet! Mammoth Mountain to close Monday May 28th 2012
5.9.2012

Locally the snow is toast. Mountain High, Snow Summit and all the others shut down Easter weekend. It has been a tough season for the entire west coast with drought conditions for most of the winter season. Typically mammoth gets more snow than anyone else due to its high elevation and remote location along the Sierra Crest. A closing date of July 4th is not a rare event. This year May 28th will be the last day to get lift serviced turns in California. There are plenty of events going on in around Mammoth lakes so head on up for some slush turns before it's all gone!

C.V.D 2012- Huge success? Check out the gallery.
5.8.12

Superman seat grab! Jesse Jolson flying high over the Conejo.
I packed up the kids and headed out Sunday afternoon. We walked in to the Moto X Xtreme Jump show. It was pretty cool! Those guys were going big! My five year old had a blast watching the show. We ate hot dogs, ice cream, roasted corn and I even had a baked Yam! Things seemed scaled down somewhat this year but it goes with the times I guess. Not much shade to be had was the only thing lacking on this hot, sunny Sunday in Thousand Oaks. Plenty of live music going on, fun rides for the kids. A fun time was had by all. Props to Mr Akrey for keeping C.V.D alive.
Conejo Valley Days coming up May 3-6.
4.27.2012

Time for Strawberry Shortcake, Funnel cakes, Tri Tip and dirt in your teeth. May 3-6 out at the soccer fields (Conejo Creek) off 23 freeway and Janns Rd. Great entertainment, rides, food and just a great place to hang out or wander around. Whether you're a teen, family with kids or adult, there's something for everyone. Motocross Xtreme Jumping featuring Jessie Jolson should be awesome!

Out with the old, in with the new. What's up with all the long standing restaurants closing?
4.26.2012

It started a couple of years ago when my neighbor's restaurant "Enrique's" closed on the boulevard. "Hungry Hunter" followed soon after. Who didn't like to go downstairs to the bar and have dinner next to the fireplace and listen to some live music? Then "Black Angus" by The Oaks closed. Many more have followed in closing their doors, due to mostly the awful economy.
The biggest disappointment to me was "Jacks Deli" in Westlake closing.
