The Smart Meters are coming!
If you haven't heard this summer SCE is going to replace your analog electric meter that works just fine with the controversial Smart Meter. So what's the big deal?. Well these draconian devices are just one more way that "the powers to be" (in this case the CPUC) can control your life and take away your right to privacy. According to SCE these devices are going to help you save money and enable you to keep better track of your power consumption. Personally I am fine with the meter I have now
Quoted from SCE website........... "Budget Assistant" is a free and easy-to-use tool to help you eliminate energy bill surprises. With Budget Assistant you’ll be able to set monthly spending goals and track your progress and get automated alerts, so you can stay in control and on budget every month." So SCE, you are going to be monitoring my every move? Really? SCE are doing the public a favor by forking out millions of dollars to install these things so their customers can save money? If you don't want one of these thing you can opt out, at a price of course! "California’s standard for metering is now smart meters. The CPUC has determined that the costs for non-standard service should be paid by those customers who choose the non-standard service. The cost covers manual meter reading and associated operational and billing activities." Well how come there is no additional cost to read my meter now? "The CPUC has established an initial set-up fee of $75 and an ongoing monthly charge of $10 to opt out of the Edison SmartConnect meter. If you participate in income-qualified programs like CARE, the initial set-up fee is $10 and the ongoing monthly charge is $5. These associated opt-out fees will be added to your monthly bill." So that's basically extortion right? If you opt out you have to cough up an extortion fee! I didn't get to vote on what the standard for metering is. I just want to be left alone to use my dishwasher or vacuum cleaner whenever I damn well please and not have to be told when I can wash my underwear or turn on the lights. Residents in Northern California have had these devices for a couple of years now and they have caused all kinds of outrage. Then there is all the fuss about the health issues associated with these devices. People living in apartment blocks on top of rows of these things are getting sick form EMF pollution. It seems every day there are more and more restrictions in our lives and Government agencies telling us how when and where to live our lives. Isn't this supposed to be a free democratic society we live in? Or are we slowly turning into a corporate controlled, facist police state? Discuss........ |
